Visionary Paintings

Ronin Soi began painting his ayahuasca induced visions as a teenager. Over time, he managed to sell his paintings, first to tourists in his village, then to the Bioferia de Lima, Miraflores, and then had his own exhibitions, including three abroad (one Sweden in 2003 and two in Switzerland in 2009 and 2010). He then founded a collective of artists with his friend Elmer Inuma, whom they call Barin Bababo (The Heirs of Master Sun). Other young Shipibo joined the collective, including Pepe Agustín, Loyber Yui, Nixon Yuimachi and more recently Pedro and David Ramirez. Together, they have made several exhibitions: twice at the Museo de la Nación in Lima en 2007 and 2017, then twice at the museum of the convent Qoricancha in Cusco in 2008 and 2018.

Having been conceived in a shamanic and hallucinatory context, these paintings are directly inspired by shipibo mythical figures converted into notorious shamanic auxiliaries, such as the anaconda (ronin in shipibo), the jaguar (ino), the siren (jenemea ainbo), the owl (popo) or the seagull (taki). In general, these works embody traditional therapeutic rituals as envisaged by the shaman through his visions. The innumerable whirling movements (maya) embody the intoxication induced by the ayahuasca decoction, which results in a synesthetic device where the voice of auxiliary spirits becomes the sonic vehicle of visual images. In the same way, the geometrical forms (kene) represent the paths (kano) by which the shaman, by means of his songs, channels the different sensations experienced by the participants in the ritual, with the aim of harmonization.
